What is the Probate Registry Fee?

The Probate Registry fee is an unavoidable government charge payable to HM Courts and Tribunals Service when submitting a probate application in England and Wales. It applies regardless of whether you apply yourself, use an online platform, or instruct a solicitor.

How much is it?

The current fee is £526 for estates with a gross value over £5,000. There is no fee for estates of £5,000 or under.

When and how is it paid?

The fee is paid when you submit your probate application. It is paid by cheque or postal order made payable to HM Courts and Tribunals Service, enclosed with your application.

Who pays it?

The fee is paid from the estate. In practice, the executor usually pays it initially from their own funds and reimburses themselves once assets are released. Many banks will release funds to cover probate fees and IHT before the Grant is issued if approached correctly.

Is this fee included in YouCanDoProbate’s charge?

No. The £526 Probate Registry fee is a government fee paid directly to HM Courts and Tribunals Service. It is entirely separate from YouCanDoProbate’s £499 platform fee.
