Yes. The only additional cost is the £526 Probate Registry fee for estates over £5,000, paid directly to HMCTS. That fee applies whichever route you take. No hourly rates, no percentages, no extras.
No. There is no legal requirement to use a solicitor to apply for probate in England and Wales, and thousands of people apply themselves every year. A solicitor does the same paperwork you would, and charges you for it.
If you can get online, you can use the platform. There is nothing to install and the questions are in plain English. There is video guidance throughout showing you exactly what to do, and if you get stuck you can call us and share your platform screen with us so we can see what you see and guide you through it.
Nothing is locked in until you generate your forms, so you can go back and change any answer as many times as you need. And even after they are generated, if you spot a mistake you can delete the forms, make the change and generate them again.
Your completed forms can be ready to submit within hours of registering. HMCTS quote eight to sixteen weeks for a Grant, though most of our customers receive theirs well within eight weeks, and some within a couple of weeks.
Where inheritance tax forms are needed, HMRC usually take around three weeks to review the IHT400. They then issue you a probate code, which you enter into the platform to generate your probate form for HMCTS, who aim to turn it around in a similar period.

I knew no IHT was due but with my mother’s nil residential band bit it meant I had to fill in IHT400, then it became various other IHT forms and I lost the will to live, as many of the questions aren’t in simple English. I had quotes from 3-8k just to fill in forms (One bank account, one shared house & one bond). Found the youcandoprobate website – phoned them up & had chat – no sales pressure. After a few days and looking at the forms again & getting confused, I signed up. Took 3 hours to fill in forms, got slightly lost at one point & requested a call back. Lovely chap found the problem (my input numbers in wrong box) corrected them and then stayed on phone while it re-calculated to make sense. Printed all forms off and have just received my code from HMRC. £495 well spent and peace of mind that all forms were correct. One thinks “ IHT I can manage that”, then IHT435 & 436 and then another one with pensions etc etc. I think I ended up sending about 6 different IHT forms in and I know if I had ploughed on myself I would not have sent all the correct forms in.

It was all clear and concise instructions. You could leave the site at anytime and all your work is saved so you can go back to where you left off. Straightforward and easy to use, I’d recommend this to anyone. I’ve had to apply for probate on an estate with various investments, property and outstanding tax. I entered all information over a couple of days, prompted by they software. I think it would be hard to go wrong. I had questions answered very quickly either by phone or email. There was a slight glitch which resulted in incorrect tax form generation. I sent a query in on a service ticket and got a phone call over a weekend that resolved everything. It was really useful to start the forms and go back to them over a period of days without having to start again. Once completed and printed off, we sent off and our Grant of Probate was received 4 weeks later. I had to contact staff at the Help Centre on a couple of occasions and they were more than helpful. Definitely would recommend using this service if the application is not complicated.
