What is a Grant of Letters of Administration?
A Grant of Letters of Administration is the legal document issued by the Probate Registry when someone dies without a valid Will. It gives the named administrator the legal authority to deal with the estate, equivalent to a Grant of Probate.
What authority does it give?
- Instruct banks and financial institutions to release funds
- Deal with the Land Registry to transfer or sell property
- Collect in investments and other estate assets
- Pay debts and distribute the estate to beneficiaries
When is it issued?
When the deceased did not leave a valid Will, or when a Will exists but there is no executor willing or able to act. The application uses form PA1A.
