I am a qualified accountant (although not a tax specialist, so no IHT experience), but even had that not been the case I’m sure I would have found the software easy and intuitive to follow. Helpline queries were answered very quickly and helpfully (within 24 hours). Absolutely didn’t need a solicitor. All 13 IHT forms were generated for me which I’d never have been able to do without help. I decided to apply for the probate certificate online to save time and just took the printout from the software and replicated it on the probate portal – again very easy.
What can I say. Site was self explanatory and easy to use. Fortunately I had all the necessary documentation which gave me a smooth ride through the forms. Probably saved us £10k of solicitors fees. I had one query about one of the sections so raised that and somebody called me within 30mins and everything was explained simply. Yes. The only additional cost is the £526 Probate Registry fee for estates over £5,000, paid directly to HMCTS. That fee applies whichever route you take. No hourly rates, no percentages, no extras.
No. There is no legal requirement to use a solicitor to apply for probate in England and Wales, and thousands of people apply themselves every year. A solicitor does the same paperwork you would, and charges you for it.
If you can get online, you can use the platform. There is nothing to install and the questions are in plain English. An Excellant service. I made good use of the advice given in the app which made the process simple and unbelievably it was granted by the HMCTS just four working days after it was delivered to them. Admittedly it was a relatively simple estate but definitely worth considering using this app rather than very expensive solicitors.

Having spoken to HMRC for advice following the death of my Mum they told me what forms I needed…. the forms were multiple, long and confusing as where the notes to help you fill in the forms !!!
